Overview

Overview

The Kareri Valley Trek in Himachal Pradesh is a scenic 3-day alpine trek through the Dhauladhar Range, culminating at the glacial Kareri Lake (2,934-2,950 m). Here’s a structured overview:

Key Highlights

  • Trail Features: Passes through oak, pine, and rhododendron forests, meadows, and glacial streams like Nyund Nallah
  • Cultural Insights: Encounters with Gaddi shepherds’ makeshift huts and livestock
  • Lake Characteristics: Freshwater Kareri Lake, fed by snowmelt, offers crystal-clear waters and views of the Dhauladhar peaks

Itinerary Summary

Day 1: Drive from Dharamshala (1,450 m) to Kareri Village (1,800 m), followed by a 6 km trek to Riyoti campsite (2,450 m)
Day 2: Trek 7 km (one-way) to Jammu Got (2,850 m), with steep sections and river crossings
Day 3: Descend to Kareri Village and drive back to Dharamshala

Practical Details

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate with gradual ascents but some steep climbs near the lake
  • Distance: ~26 km round-trip though some sources cite 14 km for the Liyoti-Kareri Lake segment
  • Best Time: Year-round, but winter treks (Dec-Mar) require ice gear
  • Cost: Starts at ₹1,799 for basic packages, with premium options up to ₹7,499

Logistics

  • Accommodation: Twin-sharing tents at riverside campsites
  • Meals: Vegetarian meals, including packed lunches and hot dinners
  • Permits: Included in most tour packages

Unique Considerations

  • Winter Trekking: The lake freezes from December to March, requiring technical gear like crampons
  • Campsite Proximity: Final campsite is 15 minutes from the lake with a Shiva temple nearby

For a less crowded alternative to mainstream Himalayan treks, Kareri Valley balances accessibility with alpine grandeur
