Overview

Day Hike to Triund – An Easy One Day Himalayan Trek from McLeod Ganj

The Day Hike to Triund is one of the most popular and rewarding short treks in the Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh. Ideal for beginners, families, and travelers with limited time, this one-day trek offers breathtaking views of the snow-clad Dhauladhar range and the vast Kangra Valley. Starting from McLeod Ganj or nearby trailheads, the hike combines forest trails, mountain scenery, and a sense of achievement—all in a single day.

Triund is located at an altitude of approximately 2,850 meters (9,350 ft) and is known for its wide grassy ridge that opens up to stunning Himalayan panoramas. Despite being a short trek, the views from the top are dramatic and memorable, making it one of the best day hikes near Dharamshala.

Starting Point & Trek Route

The day hike to Triund usually begins from McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot, or Galu Temple. Among these, Galu Temple is the easiest and most convenient starting point, as it reduces the total walking distance.

The most common and well-marked route is:
McLeod Ganj → Dharamkot → Galu Temple → Magic View Café → Triund

The total distance is around 9 km one way, with an elevation gain of about 1,100 meters. The trail passes through dense oak, deodar, and rhododendron forests, with several viewpoints and tea stalls along the way where trekkers can rest and refresh.

Duration & Difficulty

The ascent to Triund usually takes 4 to 6 hours, depending on fitness level and pace. The descent can be completed in 3 to 4 hours, making it comfortable to return to McLeod Ganj the same day.

The trek is graded as easy to moderate. While beginners can complete it without technical skills, there are a few steep and rocky sections—especially after the halfway point—that require steady walking and basic fitness. With short breaks and a relaxed pace, the hike is achievable for most first-time trekkers.

What Makes the Day Hike to Triund Special

The biggest highlight of the Triund day hike is the panoramic view from the top. On one side, you witness the dramatic Dhauladhar mountains rising sharply, and on the other, the lush Kangra Valley stretching endlessly below. On clear days, peaks like Moon Peak and Rifle Horn can also be seen.

The calm environment, fresh mountain air, and changing landscapes make this trek much more than just a walk—it’s a complete Himalayan experience in a single day.

Best Time for a Day Hike to Triund

The trek is accessible most of the year, but the best months are March to June and September to November. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and views are at their best. In winter, snow may cover the trail, making the hike more challenging and suitable only with proper guidance.

What to Carry

For a comfortable and safe hike, carry:

  • Good trekking shoes with grip
  • 2 liters of water per person
  • Light snacks or packed lunch
  • Warm jacket (even in summer)
  • Rain protection during monsoon
  • Sunscreen, cap, and sunglasses

Is a Guide Required?

A guide is not mandatory for the day hike to Triund, as the trail is well-defined. However, hiring a local guide is recommended for first-time trekkers, solo travelers, or during winter and monsoon seasons for added safety and local insights.

Optional Extensions

While this is a perfect one-day trek, many hikers choose to extend their trip by camping overnight at Triund to enjoy sunset and sunrise views. Another option is to continue further towards Laka Glacier or Snow Line, depending on time and fitness.

The Day Hike to Triund is truly one of the best short treks in Himachal Pradesh—easy, scenic, and unforgettable.
