Overview

Day Hike to Triund

The Triund day hike is one of the most popular and accessible treks in the Dharamshala region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of the snow-capped Dhauladhar mountains, lush valleys, and vibrant rhododendron forests, making it a favorite for both beginners and seasoned trekkers.

Starting Points and Route

  • The trek commonly starts from McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot, or Galu Temple. Bhagsu and Gallu are also alternative starting points.
  • The most popular and straightforward route is: McLeod Ganj → Dharamkot → Galu Temple → Magic View → Triund.
  • The distance from McLeod Ganj to Triund is approximately 9 km one way, with an elevation gain of about 1,100 meters.
  • The trail is well-marked and dotted with tea houses and small stalls for refreshments.

Duration and Difficulty

  • The trek can be completed in a single day, typically taking 4–6 hours to ascend, depending on your fitness and pace.
  • It is considered moderately challenging, with some steep and rocky sections, especially after the halfway point.
  • The descent usually takes less time.

Practical Tips

  • Best Time to Go: The trek is accessible year-round, but the best months are March to June and September to November, when the weather is clear and pleasant.
  • What to Carry: Bring enough water, snacks, and warm clothing, as weather can change rapidly at higher altitudes.
  • Fitness: While suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness, the steep sections can be challenging.
  • Guides: Hiring a local guide is optional but can enhance your experience and provide safety, especially for first-timers.
  • Transport: McLeod Ganj is well-connected by road to Dharamshala, with the nearest airport at Gaggal (about 20 km away) and the nearest major railway station at Pathankot (about 90 km away).

Optional Extensions

  • Many trekkers choose to camp overnight at Triund or nearby campsites to enjoy the sunset and sunrise, though a day hike is entirely feasible.
  • Alternative routes, such as starting from Bhagsu Nag waterfall, offer a steeper but shorter ascent.

Highlights

  • The trail passes through pine and rhododendron forests, small villages, and grazing pastures.
  • From the Triund ridge (at about 2,850 meters), trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar range.
  • Sunset from Triund is particularly spectacular, with vibrant colors and sweeping vistas.
